In practical terms, meanwhile, it keeps the cast to a manageable size and allows the narrative to remain focused.Īs an individual work, The Fruit of Grisaia is the first part of a trilogy, but it stands complete and self-contained in its own right. This may sound like a somewhat convoluted and implausible narrative setup, but in practice it's not actually all that different from the way "special education" is implemented in a number of regions around the world. This school is rather peculiar in that, including Yuuji, there are only six students in attendance. The Fruit of Grisaia tells the story of protagonist Yuuji, a young man with a somewhat checkered past that has led him to enrol in Mihama Academy, a school for students who, for one reason or another, have fallen out of mainstream education. And yet even as an experience where the sum total of the interactivity in a single playthrough amounts to making just five choices - only two of which matter in four out of the five main narrative routes - The Fruit of Grisaia is, without a doubt, one of the most compelling pieces of interactive fiction ever created. There really is no other way to describe it to refer to it as a "game" in the traditional sense seems somewhat disingenuous, as even by visual novel standards there's not a whole lot of player agency here.

Makina: Honestly I got bored halfway and stopped reading it, can't say much about it.The Fruit of Grisaia is an extraordinary work of art. Good end was nice, bad/neutral end was meh. Yumiko: It's not bad, but I really expected waaaay more from this one, didn't catch me at all. Good end was really nice, but bad end just felt too incomplete. Michiru: Really good route, very interesting development and good romance. I think Amane's bad end was the best bad end, the other ones just felt lackluster in some way. Good end was OK, it was nice to know that Yuuji found peace in the end.

The bad ending was abrupt but I think it fits the series really well, as for the good ending, it was just beautiful.Īmane: The thing with Amane route is that the whole Amane/Yuuji relationship is overshadowed by Kazuki's character introduction/story (that I really enjoyed it), the great thing about Amane's route actually is Kazuki. It was really well done, Sachi's story with her parents, the childhood relationship with Yuuji, the trauma, the development of character, the overcome. I originally wrote this at 12am and ending at 2 and I went straight to sleep when I finished because I got really tired. I like Grisaia, so any new perspective on the routes is nice!Įdit: I went back through most of the rankings and added stuff. Go ahead and tell me me that my opinions are wrong or right. (This is where I start to get pickey): Yumiko's Bad/Neutral ending.

In case you think who I think the best girl is affects my tier list, here's my heroine list: That probably did dictate my opinion on the routes. I ended up getting the bad ending first on Amane, Makina, Sachi, and Michiru (also my route order), but got the good ending on Yumiko first. I played the route ending order completely blind, so I had no idea whether or not I was in the good or bad ending. I'm going to be basing this on what I thought of the ending by itself, my personal enjoyment, and what kind of impression it gave me.
